Press Release of “2009 Solo Exhibition of Zhang KeXin”
Duration: February 13th – April 3rd 2009
Opening Ceremony: 5 pm , February 12th 2009
Venue: 6-99#, 22 International Art Plaza, No.32 Baiziwan Road (south of Today Art Museum), Chaoyang District, Beijing, 100022
Dialogue Space is honored to introduce to you the “2009 Solo Exhibition of Zhang KeXin” on February 12th, 2009. Zhang KeXin’s artistic creations, full of the power of influence and pluralism, will be presented to our audience via more than ten large scale paintings on display.
Zhang KeXin (born in 1957, in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China) has been actively working with installation, performance, video, painting, sculpture and new media in the international art world. He graduated from the Normal University of Harbin in 1982 and went to Russia as visiting scholar in 1992. In recent years, he’s been living abroad in South-East Asia, seeking inspiration for his artistic creations. During these years, he has been invited to India and Nepal for academic meetings and symposiums, as an expert on topics such as religion and art. He has also had solo exhibitions in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Spain. As a “cultural and artistic nomad”, the artist has been integrating Chinese traditional culture and the local cultures of his foreign experiences, creating an unique oriental cultural type which blends into the works comprising his artistic portfolio.
The works on exhibit here are the newest of his series “China’s Construction Rule”, having been created since 2007. These works aggrandize the juncture between traditional Chinese architecture and contemporary society by playfully imitating many current social phenomena. Talking about this series, Zhang KeXin states, “When I put these mixed icons and images under a
‘heat-treatment’, I didn’t simply spread them out and reconstruct them, but rather I wittily grafted them together, thereby exaggerating the misunderstandings - the disharmony between spiritual belief and the materialism of modern society - the fusion of eastern and western cultures - thus expressing my criticism of them.”
Varied yet simple materials, a colorful and massive style of narration, and a metaphor-like context created by intermingling the two dimensions above permeates the entire exhibition, effectively exciting the imagination of the audience. Through his newest paintings, we provide an opportunity for art lovers to experience the breadth and depth of the creation of our artist. We truly believe that this exhibition is a deserved example of the type of work given consideration by Dialogue Space – choices from an artist with an international background whose works create the possibility of enhancing the dialogue between the Chinese and international contemporary art worlds.
